My workout journey started a few years ago when my now husband decided that he wanted to make me his wife. We have been dating for about 7 years (met in high school) and I was patiently waiting for this day! As soon as he popped the big question in August of 2011, I told myself that I needed to get trim and sexy. We planned a beach wedding in Aruba since that was our first real vacation spot together. Aruba was perfect! Always sunny, perfect breeze, temperature is always just right- who wouldn’t want to get married on a tropical island! We planned it for July 2012.
We both signed up for a gym and went regularly for a few months. Our motto was “Getting Fly for July!” Before signing up for the gym, I wasn’t very active. I was working 40 hours and also going to school part-time. I barely had enough time to sleep let alone hit the gym! But we did it anyways. We went for a few good months and did a pretty good job but as soon as finals came around, I cut back the hours in the gym and focused more on my studies. Did you know that it only takes about a month for your muscles to basically atrophy if you don’t keep up with the weight lifting?! I was surprised that all my hard work immediately disappeared. I was kind of bummed about it. School took over my life and I fell off the workout wagon. Our wedding came and I felt as if I didn’t look my best. I wore my spanks under my white dress and I tried to suck it in but I still wasn’t happy with the results.
Well July 2012 has come and gone and now it’s almost to our one year anniversary. My husband has consistently kept working out and he has motivated me to get up off my behind and get fit! I don’t have any event that I’m trying to work towards, but I just want to be healthy and happy. I am not by all means considered “overweight” but there are parts of me that I think I can improve. Flat stomach- yes please. Toned arms-oh yea! Firm booty? Absolutely!!
So what did I do?- INSANITY! “The hardest workout ever put on DVD”. December of 2012 I decided that it was time to get in shape-seriously this time. I am no way affiliated or associated with Beachbody, but I had purchased this DVD a while back and it was sitting in a closet getting dusty! Why not try it!?
Let me tell you- that was NOT easy to do. I’ve never sweat so much in my life. Once I completed it, I was very proud of myself. I know a lot of people who start it and give up a few days into it. Granted I had to take a few extra rest days because my left knee was starting to ache pretty bad, but I stuck with it.
I wasn’t AS impressed with the results and I know why. MY DIET. I heard that you can workout as much as you want, but things wont changed unless your diet changes. I didn’t do so well, I ate what I wanted, when I wanted. I couldn’t resist the french fries and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. And I definitely did not eat enough fruit or veggies! I was horrible!!
Now I have turned a new leaf. I downloaded this nifty app “My Fitness Pal” that tracks my calorie intake along with any cardiovascular/strength exercise that I do. I purchased an awesome watch that tells me how many calories I burn per each workout and it has really opened my eyes and showed me that it takes a lot of work to burn of just 150 calories! Now when I see a certain muffin or pasty has 300+ calories, I just think back to my workouts and realize that it will take a lot more burpees if I want to eat that pastry!!
My journey has just started and I can already see a difference! My tummy is flattening out and my clothes are fitting better!!! I bike to work (when I can) and I always take the stairs if it’s an option. I hope to keep this life-style change permanently. I don’t claim to be a workout guru or have all the answers when it comes to nutrition. I am still learning new things day by day.
Every week hopefully I’ll keep you guys updated with my fitness struggles and over comings. Until then, I’ll try to keep the pastries and cheese danishes out of my mouth!! =)
